Why was he significant?

Jupiter discovered the first gold nugget of the Charters Towers gold fields on the 24 December, 1871 when he was approximately 12 years old. This eventually led to around 30 000 people migrating to the Charters Towers area for mining and created business opportunities in the area.

Why was he significant?

What problems did Jupiter have to overcome?

In the late 1800s Aboriginal children were allowed to be taken from their families to live and work for the Europeans, like Jupiter was with Hugh Mosman.

What problems did Jupiter have to overcome?

Aboriginal people and Europeans still fought over land at this time and there was mistrust between the two groups of people. Jupiter would have been mistrusted and treated poorly because he was an Aboriginal.

Other problems of the time

Mining costs became expensive, getting water from the ground was difficult and when the mines got deepr they became more dangerous.

The significance for Australian colonisation

The first mine of Charters Towers grew from his discovery. This ensured the region of North Queensland survived and thrived.

The significance for Australian colonisation

Many people migrated to Australia in the search for gold, helping the economy and opening up job oppotunities.
