What is matter?

Everything you need to know about the changes in the states of matter

Everything in this universe is made up of material which scientists have named "matter". The air we breathe, the food we eat, stones water, planets, stars- everything is matter. Anything that occupies space and has mass and volume is called matter. Today we will be discussing the "changes in the states of matter (effects)"

Condensation and Evaporation

Evaporation and Condensation

Gas to liquid- Condensation

Caused by a drop in temperature. It is responsible for the formation of clouds, snow and rain formation.

Liquid to Gas- Evaporation

Evaporation is when a heat source such as the Sun, it heats up a liquid which means more kinetic energy to break the force of attraction and it turns into water vapour or steam. 80% of all evaporation comes from oceans. The phenomenon of change of a liquid into vapours at any temperature below it's boiling point is called evaporation. If surface area increases, the rate of evaporation increases.

Sublimation and Deposition

Solid to Gas- Sublimation

Sublimation is the change of solid state directly to gaseous stater without going through liquid state.

Example- Dry Ice (Solid Carbon Dioxide). It's called 'DRY' as it does not turn liquid therefore being dry. Sometimes ice and snow will sublimate when temp(s) are very cold.

Gas to Solid- Deposition

It is the change of gaseous state directly to solid state without going through liquid state. It is the opposite of sublimation. Deposition happens at really low temperatures.

Example- How snow and frost are formed.

Melting and Solidification (Freezing)

Solid to Liquid- Melting

Melting is to be liquified by warmth or heat. Some things that met are ice, snow, butter, etc. Most solids have a melting point, which is the temperature they will melt.

Liquid to Solid- Freezing

Solidification is to become solid, or to form crystals. The freezing point of water is 0 degrees celsius. When something freezes, it expands. The molecules slow down.

Example- Water freezes to become ice and magma/lava forms to become rock
