Social media is now recognised as a diagnosable condition. People who are addicted to social media can now seek treatment from professionals. Whether in person or online, treatments for social media addiction can come in the form of:

  • Cognitive behavioral therapy
  • dialectical behavior therapy
  • motivational interviewing
  • group counseling sessions

Although it might not directly affect one's physical condition, social media addiction has been linked to depression, anxiety and low self-esteem especially amongst younger users.

Blended Slutions

All four of these solutions could be blended together to end the detrimental effects of social media. Laws could be put into place to create healthy content and a safe space for young people to exchange ideas and conversations. Algorithms can be produced to promote positive content instead of addictive attention-grabbing posts. Individuals can block off social media during certain times such as school hours and study time. Finally, awareness of this addiction and help for those that need it must be available
