Question 19: What changes occur in the character from the beginning to the end of the play?
Question 18:How does the character react to the opposite sex?
Question 20: Does his/her behavior on the stage help to convey the playwright’s theme and purpose?
Proctor Reacts to the opposite sex in different ways, going from having his own wife, and having an affair with his wife for Abigail, but also in his way to create fear, he pressures them into believing his way, and making them know who the right one is. In another instance though a change of heart makes him want to prevent his wife from getting hanged, and finally being able to call out Abigail.
During the occurrence of the Play we see that Proctors love for Elizabeth had grown, where he actually does all he can to help Elizabeth to no longer be trialed, or hanged for witchcraft, he goes as far as to put his reputation on the line. Whereas the Beginning of the play he still debates on his feelings for Abigail, and Elizabeth, which makes him hold this guilt until he finally notices Elizabeth for her honesty, and truthfulness.
Proctors behaviors does coney the theme and purpose of the play because people tended to have there own beliefs and way of dealing with there problems there. This is shown with Proctor because he likes to keep everything to himself, and makes his own decisions based on his preferences.
Question 17:Is the conflict caused by the character? Could he have prevented it?
Question 15:What is the cause of the inner conflict?
Question 16:What is the cause of the outer conflict?
John Proctor
Proctor in ways has caused his conflicts because he was never motivated to be interested into god, or his wife at times, because of his mixed emotions. In someways Proctors conflicts could have been prevented, if people saw him as a more honest man, and believed him they would be on his side, but since people do not see his as an honest man it is hard to believe him .
The cause of Proctors guilt, and beliefs are because one he cheated on Elizabeth, who he claims was the nicest person to him who did nothing, and that she is the most honest person he knows, so he is guilty that he betrayed her in that way, but at the say time guilty because he still has feelings for Abigail, and he does not know who to believe. Now his beliefs towards god are somewhat gone, but there since he knows whats right, but personally proctor does not like being judged.
Proctors outer conflict is trying to show that he is capable of doing his own things without anyone's help, for instance Proctor is shown gathering his own wood, which shows his physical strength, and how he will grab, and yell at people to make them tell the truth, such as the instance with Marry Warren, where he forced her to tell the truth of the Witchcraft the girls performed.
Question 12: What is his/her religious, political, social, and economic background?
Question 11: What information does the playwright give in stage directions and description of characters in the play?
Question 10: What events in his/her life or in the play make the character behave as he/she does?
Question 14: How does he/she get along with other characters? What is his/her attitude toward them?
Question 8:What do other characters say about him/her?
Question 13: Does he/she control or master the circumstances of the play, or do they seem to be beyond his/her control?
Question 9: What kind of person is he/she?
The Kind of Person Proctor is can be identified as the type to make himself feel better, or work out a situation into which he is the good person. This is shown when Proctor is talking to Elizabeth about the Affair he had, and he tells Elizabeth that she is making him feel guilty about it, where as Proctor actually has been holding in that guilt, by not confessing, and by keeping those feelings towards Abigail, which makes him lost about himself.
Proctor is seen as not being Spiritually/religiously active, Politically though he believes in a fair justice system, and tries to keep his name from being ruined. Socially, Proctor tries to stay away from people, but will call them out when they are in the wrong. Economically Proctor is well off, he owns his own farm, and land.
Proctor gets along with people well when they agree with him, and are on his side. When they are not he usually argues, and fights with to make them see things his way. Proctors attitude towards these people is aggressive at times.
Most characters such as Parris, Marry Warren, and Danforth accuse, and call John Proctor an unholy man, because he does not show up to church, he was shown as a liar, and Marry warren says he did some type of Witchcraft on her. While John Proctors Wife Elizabeth, and Giles Corey believe that Proctor is a good and honest man.
The stage directions give off that Proctor is a physically strong person who finds pride in himself. he is told to be unholy, and a farmer. Though Proctor is this way he is easy to call anyone who is hypocritical towards there beliefs.
The events that Make Proctor behave as if his way is better than other peoples, or being unholy, has to do with Paris being a minister. Since Paris does not do a good job in Helping everyone's faith grow, but instead gathers money to glorify the church, and other things. Proctor has lost all faith in god, and believes there is no god, which causes him to believe that his way is the best way.
Somethings seem to be in Proctors control, if he wants to fix something he will usually go out and fix it, like when Elizabeth went to get trialed he was able to get the truth out of Marry Warren on the witch craft that had occurred. The only time things were out of his control were when people trialed him in court for his unholiness, since it was true, he had no hope or belief in God.
Question 2: What motivates the character to act the way he/she does?
Question 3:What does the character want to achieve?
Question 1: What decision does the character face?
Question 6: How does he/she treat other characters in the play?
Question 4:How does the character behave?
Question 5: How does he/she feel and think?
Question 7: How do other characters treat him/her?
Proctor Feels and thinks that he would rather lie and go to hell, than telling the truth, and being go to heaven, because he sees it as not his character, since he is known for being the rebel. Such as being the one who does not go to church, and the one who will call out people.
The things that motivate Proctor To be Prideful of what he does is showing that he is physically strong, and that he does not mind if he is considered a bad person to others if he it means to keep that status.
Other characters treat Proctor as someone who is put to the side mainly, he described to be away from everyone mostly, until later on when he tries to save his wife's life from being hanged. During this scene people like Parris, and Danforth, put his holiness to the test, and test how faithful to god he is. While people like Marry Warren, lie against Proctor to save their own lives.
Proctor treats everyone in the play equally, he does not favor one person, and he will not change his views on people. such as Abigail, he try's his best to testify, and win against her to protect his wife. Which means most people he calls them out, and tells them what they are doing wrong , but later on his heart softens for his wife, and he does all he can to save her.
The Decisions that John Proctor faces are deciding weather he should turn to god and confess to his sins, or keeping his reputation, in a sense to not taint his name forever, so people will not see him as a bad person. If Proctor confesses to his sins then he would relief this burden he has, bet then Proctor finds pride in himself, and he would not want to ruin that status he has upon Salem.
Proctor wants to achieve living up to his name, Reputation, and status, so that his children can respect him for the person he is, and so they will see him as someone who will rather die, than having a bad name, and being discriminated by many people.
Proctor behaves in a way of arrogance, and pride, in which he will makes things the way he wants to, and mentally say that his way is the best way. Another Instance is how he had himself hanged because he did not want to ruin his name, his pride, and lie about using witchcraft to live, listened he would rather hang.
