Situational Language Teaching

(The Oral Approach)

Components of the Method

• The Oral Approach/Situational Language Teaching come from work British Linguists began working on in 1920, and was used through the 1960s

• Linguists Harold Palmer, A.S. Hornby, and Michael West were prominent people from the British 20th Century Language Researcher.

Vocabulary

The Role of Vocabulary

o The linguists came to the consensus that vocabulary is one of the most important aspects of foreign language acquisition

o With more vocabulary, there was increased emphasis on reading skills

Vocabulary Control

- The 3 men established a list of about 2000 words that they considered essential for the comprehension of the 4 elements of language (writing, reading, listening and speaking)

- Being introduced to new vocabulary in controlled situations

Grammar Control

Grammar

- some linguists thought of creating grammatical structures into sentence patterns to help understand the rules of English syntax

Focus on vocabulary, reading, and grammatical structures

Strengths

Strengths

• It is attractive to many of the teachers. Its use of teaching grammar patterns was crucial for its use, and part of its popularity. (Rhalmi 2018).

o Does not require many resources

o Encourages oral output without many risks, works better for older English Learners

Weaknesses

• Does not allow for creating unique sentences. Primarily based on repetition (Rhalmi 2018).

o Not organic or experiential learning

Weaknesses

Compared to Today's Methods

• Many consider some of these principles to be the foundation of the current ELL teaching methods

o Considered to be a highly used by rarely acknowledged approach to language
