types of consciousness

Elijah Flores and Alicia Torres- Alanis

Introduction

What is consciousness ?

Self Awareness

The state of being awake and aware of one's surroundings

The word consciousness or the idea appeared in some burial practices. Some express spiritual beliefs and provide evidence of mind reflective thoughts.( Pearson 1999, Clark and Riel- Salvatore 2011)

the history

However in recent historical development, historians/philosophers have argued consciousness arose sometime after the Homeric era (Jaynes, 1974)

Different types of consciousness

Organism/creature consciousness

A thing is considered a conscious being if it has the capacity for thought, sensation, feeling, etc.

Control consciousness

A creature is conscious if it is awake and has an occurrence of mental states, is in control of its actions in a way that is consonant with mental states.

state/event consciousness

This type of consciousness may also be regarded as a ‘mental state.’ This is the state of the subject or an occurring event within the subject as conscious in state and hosting event.

...three sub-cases of unconsciousness or subconsciousness which are:

This leads to..

-Simple distraction or instances of other inattention

-Inaccessibility of processing, such as language comprehension or recognizing patterns

-Repression of memory or trauma

subjective consciousness

This is having a point of view. A subject consciousness

in this sense is “what it is like” for the subject to be in whatever mental states it is in.

introspective consciousness

This perception is derived from Lockean’s “inner sense.” Which focuses one’s attention on their internal character one’s experiences itself.

self-consciousness

This conceptualizes having a sense of oneself as an individual separate from other individuals and the rest of one’s surroundings.

There is..

-Sentience: these are sensory capabilities to which an organism senses and responds to its own world.

-Wakefulness: this form is represented only if the organism is awake and in response to their normal alertness.

also...

-Self consciousness: In order for an organism or creature to be considered as consciousness it must obtain self- awareness.

-Subject of consciousness:Another way to interpret conscious creatures/organisms is to define the notion of conscious states.

in addition...

This takes into account as a useful sense. One is conscious of all if they are able to verbally report their account of consciousness.

reportability

This entitles that a creature is aware or conscious of objects such as..abstract, external, internal, somatic, etc.

Problems of consciousness

The what question

What is consciousness? What are its principal features? And by what means can they be best discovered, described and modeled?

the how question

How does consciousness of the relevant sort come to exist? Is it a primitive aspect of reality, and if not how does (or could) consciousness in the relevant respect arise from or be caused by nonconscious entities or processes?

the why question

Why does consciousness of the relevant sort exist? Does it have a function, and if so what is it?
