History of the Liberal Party

-Earlier known as The Reformers, an opposition group to the ruling government.

-Originated in the struggle for a responsible government in British North America in the 19th century (http://faculty.marionopolis.edu).

-In the 1850s, the Reform Party was split, and the more radical group became known as the Clear Grits.

-Clear Grit party of Upper Canada was led by George Brown, and was the group that later formed the Liberal Party.

-Founded in 1867.

Ideological Roots

-Liberalism is based on the fact that the "individual is the unit of supreme value in society" (www.thecanadianencyclopedia.ca)

-Every individual is unique, and should be recognized. "We believe that every person has the right to be heard and represented in a democratic society" (www.liberal.ca) The focus on each individual is one of the aspects that makes liberalism different from other parties.

Wilfrid Laurier became the Liberal leader in 1887.

Liberal leader Lester Pearson became Canada's Prime Minister in 1963.

Biography

-Born on Dec. 25, 1971 in Ottawa.

-Son of Pierre Trudeau, who was the Prime Minister of Canada for 15 years.

-In 1994, Trudeau earned a Bachelor of Arts in English, and earned his Bachelor of education fours years later.

-Some previous jobs before he became interested in politics include a snowboard instructor, and a French and math teacher.

-In 2,000, when Trudeau spoke a eulogy at his father's funeral, it brought him back to the public eye, and it became a speculation that he would find a career in politics.

-He became interested in advocacy work, where he took action on various public issues. This made him often present on the media.

-In 2008, he ran for and won a seat in the Liberal party nomination in the Montreal riding of Papineau (www.thecanadianencyclopedia.ca).

-2013, he won the Liberal party leadership.

On Oct. 19/2015, Justin Trudeau brought the Liberals from third place in the House of Commons to first place.

-Liberals won the majority government of 184 seats out of 338 Common seats.
