Medical genetics is any application of genetic principles to medical practice. This includes studies of inheritance, mapping disease genes, diagnosis and treatment, and genetic counseling.

The genealogical method in human genetics is a method for studying human genealogy. The study is based on the laws of Mendel.

This method - studies the inheritance of human traits, for example, skin color, eye color, growth, illness, mental qualities.

An important condition: there must be information about direct relatives.

Using this method, you can find out that a gene is transmitted through an autosome or sex chromosome.

Main goals:

1. Establishment of the hereditary nature of the disease.

2. Establishing the type of inheritance of the disease.

3. Identification of persons to be examined, do they have such a sign?

4. Conducting a genetic consultation.

Methods of genealogical research

Main stages:

1. Gather family information.

2. Make a family tree.

3. Perform genealogical and genetic analysis.

For the compilation of the pedigree, conventions and graphics are used:

  • Proband is the person whose pedigree is to be compiled.
  • The Sibs are his brothers and sisters.
  • The square is a man.
  • The circle is a woman.
  • A black circle or square is a sign that is being studied.
  • One line is marriage, family relationships.
  • Dotted line - extramarital affairs.

Please answer the questions:

1. What is an autosomal dominant type of inheritance and how will the trait manifest itself?

2. What is an autosomal recessive type of inheritance and how will the symptom manifest itself?

3. What is the X-linked-dominant type of inheritance and how will the trait manifest itself?

4. What is the X-linked-recessive type of inheritance and how will the symptom appear?

3. What is a Y-linked type of inheritance and how will a trait manifest itself?
