Beowulf Character Analysis

Ethan, Manny, Kaeden, Lawson

Beowulf

Beowulf Analyisis

  • Beowulf is the main protagonist of the story, and he embodies the classic characteristics of what a hero was to the Anglo-Saxons.
  • Beowulf is introduced as the "strongest man in the world" and as someone who fears nothing.
  • He possesses unrelenting strength, and when he hears of trouble or evil, he heroically takes action.
  • In his youth, he is mainly characterized by his indomidable strength, loyalty, and pride as a warrior.
  • In his older age, he became a great ruler for many years, but his physical prowess had waned.
  • Beowulf being the grand hero that he was, even in his old age, his pride as a warrior remained.
  • So the elerly Beouwulf confronts the dragon that was posing a threat, but he is ultimately defeated.
  • He is not the strong warrior he used to be, he must put his faith in a younger warrior.

Key Quotes:

"My Lord Higlac might think less of me if I let my sword go where my feet were afraid, if I hid Behind some broad linden shield: my hands alone shall fight for me."

"Then Beowulf rose, still brave, still strong, And with his shield at his side, and a mail shirt on his breast, strode calmly, confidently, toward the tower, under the rocky cliffs: no coward could have walked there!"

Key Quotes

"Follower and the strongest of the Geats-Greater and stronger than anyone anywhere in this world."

"I've never known fear, as a youth I fought in endless battles. I am old, now, but I will fight again, seek fame still..."

Beowulf Comparisons:

Modern-Day Comparison

  • Beowulf is a classic epic hero characterized by insurmountable strength, courage, and loyalty.
  • This makes him similar to modern-day heroes such as Thor, Superman, Hulk, and spider-man.
  • All of these heroes possess unnatural strength, the willingness to fight, and the heroic nature to save others.
  • Superman is the most similar to Beowulf though, as they are both seen as unstoppable beings who can overcome any threat they are faced with through physical might.

Grendel Analysis

Grendel

  • Grendel is the orginal villian in the story and fills the role of the town monster.
  • He is the antagonist of the story because he creates an obstacle for the protaganist, Beowulf.
  • He seems to be a unbeatable evil villian with a unquenchable thirst for blood.
  • Grendel lives in the marsh, and moves with the night, only attacking in the darkness.
  • When Grendel attacks, he attacks hard, killing many and killing brutally.
  • Represents an evil that must be overcome by good (Beowulf).

Modern Day Comaprisons

Modern day comparisons

  • Grendel's modern day comparison is Carnage, who is a Spider Man villian.
  • I chose this comparison because they are both beastly-like creatures that spend their free time eating and terrorizing humans.
  • They have also been cast away, or been neglected by someone.
  • The word carnage means the killing of a large number of people.

Quotes

  • "The shadow of death hunted in the darkness, hunted Hrothgar's warrior's young and old."
  • "So man kinds enemy contiuned his crimes, killing as often, coming alone, bloodthirsty, and horrible."
  • "A powerful moster, living down in the darkness, growled in pain, impatient"
  • "Out from the marsh, from the foot of misty hills, and bogs, bearing God's hatred, Grendel came hoping to kill."

Key Quotes

1.) Hrothgar, son of Halfdane, is the King of Herot. He built the glorious town to celebrate the Almighty and his creations with his men.

2.) When Grendel attacked the men of Herot, Hrothgar could not defend the town and grew into a deep sorrow.

Hrothgar

3.) Hrothgar knew he couldn't save his men, but his faith was restored when Beowulf arrived in Herot. Beowulf kills Grendel and his mother which allows Hrothgar to defend his beloved town once again and put an end to ongoing misery of Herot.

"Herot, covered with hammered gold, and glowing in the sun..."

"Hrothgar, their lord, sat joyless in Herot, a mighty prince mourning..."

Hrothgar/Black Panther

Modern Day Comparison

Modern Day Comparison

1.) I compared Black Panther and Hrothgar

2.) Both were sons of a true king and fierce warrior.

3.) Neither could defend their town, so they relied on a hero to save it.

The Dragon Analysis:

Dragon

1. The Dragon is introduced as yet another imposing evil that Beowulf must conquer. Another representation of man vs. monster, the ultimate monster.

2. The Dragon is the final foe of the story, and may even be the representation of death and destruction itself.

3. Up until the point of the dragon's introduction, Beowulf had triumphed over every other evil he had faced, but the dragon is meant to represent a foe that cannot be overcome by pure heroism and strength, like what he had done in the past.

4. Beowulf now must rely on his younger soldier, Wiglaf, to take down the mighty dragon representing a once mighty hero's demise.

5. The dragon may very well represent fate itself no longer being on Beowulf's side.

Dragon Comparison

Modern-Day Comparison

1. The dragon's modern-day comparison is Emperor Palpatine from Star Wars.

2. Both Palpatine and the dragon defeated the main hero/heros of the story, only to later be defeated by a new hero carrying the will of the former hero. (Wiglaf/Luke Skywaker)

3. They are both shown as evil beings serving their own self gain, and defeated by heroes representing good.

Pictures

Wiglaf

Analysis

Wiglaf

1.) Wiglaf is introduced when Beowulf is in desperate need after all of his soldiers abandoned him while fighting the dragon.

2.) He is shown to have the characteristics of being a great warrior, like Beowulf once was.

3.) He doesn't seem to save Beowulf for the fame, but rather feels anguished to see a once great warrior being defeated.

4.) Wiglaf's sword represnts the bravery for when Beowulf needed him. He is fearless and not afraid to help Beowulf. Beowulf's shield being destroyed represents his fall as a warrior.

5.) At the time of Beowulf's death, he passes the torch to Wiglaf and told him to lead his people and help them.

Key Quotes

Key Quotes

1. "His soul did not melt, his sword was strong, the dragon discovered his courage."

2. "His brave and noble followers; they ran for their lives, fled deep in a wood. And only one of them remained, stood there, miserable, remembering, As a good man must, what kinship should mean. His name was Wiglaf. "

Modern-Day Comparison

Comparisons

- Both Iron Man and Beowulf contain fierce and heroic characteristics. They both do whatever it takes to save their country from all evil.

- When Iron Man died, he passed the torch to Spiderman and expected him to protect the people. When Beowulf died, he passed the torch to Wiglaf and wanted him to serve and protect the people.

Grendal's Mother Analysis

Grendel's Mother

1.) Grendal's mother is first introduced when Grendel is killed by Beowulf.

2.) Vengeance overtakes her and she kills Hrothgar's closest friend, seeking to avenge her son.

3.) The lair represents a never ending darkness within her. A pit with no light at the bottom, that no wisdom can reach. Not even Beowulf's sword, made to slay evil, could bring her down. Only a sword fueled by desperation and savagery was able to take her out in the end.

"At night that lake Burns like a torch. No one knows its bottom No wisdom reaches such depths."

"But her guest Discovered that no sword could slice her evil Skin, that Hrunting could not hurt her."

Key Quotes

Harry Osborne Spiderman 3

Modern Day Comparison

Grendal's mother is fueled by anger and vengeance, just like Harry Osborne. After his dad dies to spider-man, he seeks revenge and is a bloodlusted character who will do anything to avenge the death of his father.
