The merchant account collects all the transactions it approved for the day in a "batch". At the end of the day, they send the approved total to the credit card company.

For PayPal, 'pilot-' is the prefix for when the system is in test mode. For Vantiv, there are additional credentials needed to test. Auth does not have a test mode.
a2z forwards the transaction details to the client's payment gateway (PayFlow Pro, Authorize.net or Vantiv).
The payment gateway forwards the transaction to the client's payment processor (their choice, can be PayPal, can be whomever they choose. This is sometimes recommended by their merchant account).
The payment processor forwards the transaction information to the card companies (Visa/MC/Disc/AMEX).
a2z's entire production environment is hosted by Rackspace.
The data processing (everything we just discussed) goes through Rackspace servers.
We lease these servers to house our application.
All certifications and compliance on our payment processing are maintained by Rackspace.

Customer makes a payment online - in our case this is through the Online Exhibit Contract, Add On Page, Online Sponsorship Module or My Account.
The card company sends the merchant account a response of approve or decline (typically with an accompanying code). They put a hold on the customer's credit card account for the approved amount.
The merchant account tells the payment gateway the response.
The gateway tells a2z what the response is.
