Is depression the consequence of biological or psychological factors?

  • Mental health disorders interest me, in particular the causes of them

  • 'Nature or nurture' argument causes a lot of dispute/debate

  • Original question - What are the causes of depression, how can it be treated and how effective are these treatments?
  • E.g. AQA A2 Psychology textbook, online journals, Google Scholar, websites, etc.

  • Used to obtain studies conducted by a number of psychologists to explore a variety of explanations of depression

  • Key ideas discovered:

1) Biological: genetic influence, hormones, neurotransmitters

2) Psychological: early loss, life events, cognition, hopelessness

  • Major depression is the leading psychological disorder in the western world
  • You are 10 times more likely to suffer from depression now than you were in 1945
  • Up to 80% of suicide deaths are in sufferers of major depression
  • Challenges faced and how I overcame them:
