Cognitive Dissonance

Double-Speak

When the speaker uses language to distort the meaning of what he or she is saying, typically to detract from harshness.

The feeling of uncomfortable tension due to two conflicting thoughts & beliefs.

"Mary's not missing -- I've got her hung up back at my place!"

"I blame all my trouble on my mother. She should have made me a girl. … I used to wonder if some kind of operation could change me into a woman."

Expectancy Violation

Emphasizes person's perception of interaction that is based on how others should react based on norms -> When the unexpected happens.

Ed's abnormal personality became his norm, so no one expected him to be capable of perpetrating violence. Even when the police showed up to his house with suspicions, they expected him to be involved in Bernice's death, not grave robbing.

Ed Gein "The Butcher of Plainfield"

Early Childhood

Ed's Life Without His Mother

Ed starts visiting his mother's grave site 18 months after her death.

He boards up his mother's room and never opens it again until his arrest.

He twists off her head and takes it back with him.

After failing her firstborn and enduring the act she hated most, Augusta was determined to raise the perfect child.

Every day, Ed and his brother listened to Augusta read from the Bible.

Born in 1906 to a religiously fanatic mother and alcoholic father in La Crosse, Wisconsin.

Then, he starts to frequent as many as 40 other cemeteries where he collected artifacts and occasionally had some fun.

The law of the house

Aside from Augusta, women were painted whores and corruptors of men. Avoiding sex = avoiding damnation.

As he watched them, he thought he was wetting his pants, because he felt a warm, tingling sensation around the same area...

When Ed was 7, he witnessed his parents slaughtering a hog outside their grocery store.

A few years later, Augusta caught Ed masturbating...

"Curse of man!"

Ed Goes to School

Bernice Worden disappears from her hardware store during the first day of hunting season.

Balancing home life and school life proved to be impossible as Augusta punished her son if he tried to connect with any of the school children...

Making friends is hard for shy Ed. The kids think he's weird and talks funny because of a lesion on his tongue.

Although no one had suspected Ed of violence, the police found out he had been the last to see her alive, so they make a trip to Ed's farmhouse...
