Adjective Suffixes

Suffix meaning examples

-able, -ible "capable of being" readable, divisible

-al "relating to" fictional

-ant, -ent "having the quality of" pleasant, obedient

-ive "having the quality of" talkative

-less "without" useless

-ous "full of" joyous

Adjective and Adverb Suffixes

The Suffix -ous

If the suffix -ous is added to the noun "poison", the adjective "poisonous" is the end result.

The adjective "poisonous" means "full of poison".

Example: Some snakes are

poisonous.

The Suffix -ly

The suffix -ly changes adjectives to adverbs.

Adding -ly to "angry" creates "angrily", which means "in an angry way".

Example: He angrily stomped out of the

room.

What is a Suffix?

-A suffix is a syllable or syllables added to the end of a word.

-A suffix can change the function or use of the word.

-When added to nouns or verbs, a suffix can create adjective, nouns, or adverbs.
