1. Japanese ships are strictly forbidden to leave for foreign countries.

Why is the Edict important?

  • To stabilize the country, Tokugawa Iemitsu enforced the social class system.
  • People are divided into seven classes: Shogun, Samurai, farmers, artisans, merchants, Eta (the outcasts), and Hinin (the non-human).

  • Before the Sakoku Period, there is the Sengoku Period which is a time when Japan was in chaos.
  • The Sakoku Edict is the close country policy created by Tokugawa Iemitsu in response to the Sengoku Period to stabilize Japan.

Literature

Basho Matsuo, a well known poet, established and promoted a new poetic form called haiku, which was composed of three lines of five, seven, and five syllables.
