Rise and Fall of

Ancient Greece

First I am going to talk about Mycenaea which was from 1600 BCE to 1200 BCE. This was in the Bronze Age.

I think that civilization means having a type of culture or society. It also might mean a complex state of human society, and a high level of culture, creating products and government.

After the Mycenaean's came Ancient Greece. Which was from 1100 BCE to 150 BCE

  • In Athens all free men had a say in how the city was run. They meet once every ten days to discuss new laws and took decisions by voting.
  • This type of government is called “Democracy” which means rule by the people.
  • Women and slaves weren’t allowed to vote

After the Peloponnesian war the city states kept on fighting each other. They didn’t notice what was happening to Macedonia. The Macedonian king, Philip 2, had built a strong army of well-trained soldiers. Then he began to conquer the city states, by 338 BCE he had controlled Greece. Soon after this Philip 2 was murdered and his 20 year old son ,Alexander, became king.

Alexander was a brave and a great commander. He led his army on a journey over 32,000km, creating the largest empire in history. Now he is known as “Alexander the Great”.

They were surrounded by water so they developed ships for trading and battling.

After Alexander’s death, his generals fought against each other for the control of the empire. Then Antigons took over Greece and Macedonia. Ptolemy defeated Egypt, where his family controlled the country for 300 years. The other cities were taken over by Seleucus and became known as the Seleucus Empire. In the end all the kingdoms were taken over by Rome.
