Symbols & Themes of Cyrano de Bergerac

The Letter with Cyrano's Tears and Christian's Blood

The mixture of blood and tears on the final letter symbolizes the creation of Cyrano and Christian into the romantic hero. This combination helps Roxane realize their deception.

Danger in Deception

Cyrano's Nose

The White Plume

Indeed, his one minor flaw- his willingness to deceive Roxane in order to to help Christian, and even to win her love himself- prevents him from having her at all. Because Cyrano deceives Roxane even after Christian’s death, he cannot tell her his love for her. Doing that would show disrespect for Christian’s memory and make fun of her mourning.

Cyrano's nose is another important part of literature, like Captain Hook's lack of hand. His nose shows us one of Cyrano's biggest flaws: his lack of self confidence. He gets angry when people talk about his nose, but when Valvert tries to say Cyrano's nose is big, Cyrano makes fun of his nose himself, just to make Valvert look like an idiot. His nose also acts as a barrier that keeps Cyrano from telling Roxane he loves her.

Cyrano's plume is a symbol of his courage, loyalty, and undying honor. The fact that these are his last words shows how noble and brave he is. His white plume also shows who he really is.

Inner and Outer Beauty

Cyrano represents inner beauty as he battles Christian, who is outer beauty, for Roxane's affection. Cyrano’s and Christian’s outer beauties differ, of course: Christian has good looks while Cyrano has a clever mind.
