Earth's Place in the Universe

MS-ESS1-1. Develop and use a model of the Earth-sun-moon system to describe the cyclic patterns of lunar phases, eclipses of the sun and moon, and seasons.

Riddle me this: Why is it winter in Brazil, but summer in Canada? How on earth (haha) do seasons work?

3 minute post on Edmodo under Science.

(Don't worry, being wrong helps your brain remember!)

The Earth revolves around its axis every _____ hours. This causes day/night.

The Earth revolves around the every ______ days. This is our ________.

Then, the Earth tilts on its axis as it's spinning. This tilt causes seasons.

Task:

Read ALL answers on Edmodo with your partner.

1. Choose one person who answer you think was the closest to the real answer.

2. Choose one person who you really think learned the most today!

In a solar eclipse, the moon moves between the Earth and the Sun. When this happens, part of the Sun's light is blocked. The sky slowly gets dark as the moon moves in front of the Sun.

When the moon and Sun are in a perfect line, it is called a total eclipse.

A lunar eclipse happens when the Earth moves between the Sun and the moon, blocking part of the Sun's light from reaching the moon.

Task:

1. If your partner group is the A group, find a short video (less than 2 minutes) that clearly shows/explains a Solar Eclipse to students.

2. If your partner group is the B group, you will find a short video (less that 2 minutes) that clearly shows/explains a Lunar Eclipse to students.

3. Watch 4 videos with your partner or alone. Watch 2 lunar videos and 2 solar videos.

4. Then, answer the questions posted with your partner.

Note: If someone posts a video, you will need to find another video.

means to slowly get bigger.

means to slowly get smaller.

This lesson is really cool, fun and crafty. We are going to have to make some subsititions because I don't have everything. Since I trust you, I know you will make the best model you can.

Instead of chalk, we will use white-out.

To set up carefully, you will need to have GOOS taped to your desk. We cannot have even one spill. Zero. Nada. White-out does not come off. Be careful with your clothes too.

Next, you will need scissors. Tape. Black Paper. Patience. You will need to be calm. Think Daoism... Peace. Beauty. Love.

As you watch the next video, think of the essential question, "What is Earth's place in the solar system?" and "What makes up our solar system?"

Lunar and Solar Eclipses-- What's the Difference?

By: Jennifer Kotulak

Line up, from smallest to tallest. How big do you feel?

Let's Make a Model!

Moon Phases - Why does the Moon change each night?

Phase 3: First Quarter

One half of the moon is lit up by the sun and is slowly getting bigger.

Phase 4: Waxing Gibious

Phase 2: Waxing Crescent

A little more than half of the moon is lit up by the sun.

Small part of the moon is lit up and is slowly getting bigger.

Seasons Explained ... or Maybe Not

Phase 5: Full Moon

Phase 1: New Moon

The entire moon is lit up at this point.

The side of the moon that is facing the Earth is not lit up by the sun.

To the Earth, the moon is not visible.

Phase 8: Waning Cresent

A small part of the moon is lit up.

Phase 6: Waning Gibbous

The part of the moon that is lit is getting smaller.

Phase 7: Last Quarter

Half of the moon is lit up.

The part Earth can see is getting smaller.
