Trouble in Boston
- Colonist protesting new laws and taxes
- This made British officials nervous so they sent troops to occupy colonial cities
The Boston Massacre
- March 5, 1770
- Some soldiers tried to calm the crowd
- Crowd moved in screaming and throwing sticks, stones, and clubs at the soldiers
- Redcoats got nervous and fired - five colonists were killed
- Colonial leaders used the killings as propoganda
- Colonists called for stronger boycotts on British goods
- Britain repealed Townshend Acts taxes, except on tea
Crisis over tea
- Parliament passed Tea Act to save East India Company
- Angered Colonists and they vowed to stop the ships from unloading tea
- Many colonists force shipped to turn around and leave before they even unloaded
Coercive "Intolerable" Acts
- Closed Boston Harbor until Colonist paid for the tea
- Forced them to shelter soldiers in their own homes
- Quebec Act - gave Quebec a gov't and land west of the Appalachian mountains
