Organic Theory
- Borders do not exist permanently; states are organic and growing
- created by Friedrich Ratzel
- used to explain the growth of a state in biological terms
Health
- State: depends upon the moral and physical health of the individuals, and associations of individuals. If not working, efficiency and performance suffers
- Organism: depends upon the health of the cells organs. If they get diseased, the whole organism suffers
Wear and Tear
Simple to Complex
- State: elders die and their place is taken by younger individuals
- Organism: old and worn out cells die and are replaced by fresh new cells
- State: simple tribal organization to the modern complex structure with a multiplicity of functions
- Organism: embryo grows to a complete whole with various organs having variety of functions
Strengths/Weaknesses
- Strengths:
+ convenient for all aspects of human geography
+ easily understand growth/development of state
- Weaknesses:
- mostly justification for imperial expansion -> led to German imperial thinking (Hitler used it)
Composition
- component units contribute the life of the whole
- State: individuals
- Organism: cells
3 Main Systems
- sustaining system
- State: agriculture and industries
- Organism: digestive system for food
- distributory system
- State: transport and communication
- Organism: circulatory system by blood
- regulating system
- State: government and military
- Organism: brain and nerves
How to Remember
- basketball or any team sport
- started as a simple sport, grew into the complex game we now know
- special positions in a team
- new teammates replace old ones
