Percentile Ranks
Subtests
Percentile ranks indicate he standing of a child relative to that of the children in the standardized sample.
Percentile ranks range from 1 to 99, with 50 as the mean and median.
Scaled Scores
Within the composite scales are subtests.
- Receptive Communication
- Expressive Communication
- Fine Motor
- Gross Motor
Scaled scores can be calculated for all subtests and are derived from the subtest total raw scores and range from 1-19, with a mean of 10, and a standard deviation of 3
Composites
Composite Scores
The Bayley Scales are compiled of five composite scales.
- Cognitive Scale
- Language Scale
- Motor Scale
- Social-Emotional Scale
- Adaptive Behavior Scale
Composite scores are generated from the language scale, motor scale, and adaptive behavior scale.
They are then scaled to a metric with a mean of 100, a standard deviation of 15, and a range from 40-160.
Scoring
The Adaptive Behavior Scale is unique because it measures "what the child actually does, in addition to what he or she may be able to do." The areas measured within this scale include the following:
- Communication
- Community Use
- Health and Safety
- Self-Care
- Self-Direction
- Functional Pre-Academics
- Home Living
- Social
- Motor
The Bayley III provides four types of norm-referenced scores:
- scaled scores
- composite scores,
- percentile ranks
- growth scores
In addition, confidence intervals are available.

I found the kit to be very user friendly with a 266 page manual on how to administer the test.
Each question in the kit is explained and there are images to indicate any proper handling necessary.
There are normative and conversion tables for every age group.
There are accommodations and modifications, as well as growth chart samples.

Results
Who is it for and what does it assess?
The Bayley Scales of Infant and Toddlers assesses the developmental functioning of infants and young children from the ages of 1 to 42 months.
The primary purpose is to identify children with developmental delay and to aid in intervention.
Test Length
I found the Bayley Scales of Infant and Toddler Development test layout, administration, and assessment to be very comprehensive.
I thought they were very thorough and informative in explaining their methodology and scoring technique. I would use this test at my work place and would recommend it to others, as well.
I especially liked that they had pictoral depiction of how a test should be administered, what you were looking for in the child, what items you need, and they way your record form should look.
The Bayley Scales kit contains a administrative manual, a technical manual, a screening test record, a social emotional and adaptive behavior scale, and a record form.
- 12 months and younger = 50 minutes
- 13 months and older = 90 minutes
- Allow a child to take 5 minutes for a break or snack if needed
Test Environment
- Individuals in the environment should be kept to a minimum
- Ideally, examiner, child, and one primary caregiver
- NO MORE THAN 3 ADULTS
Final Word....
- Can be administered by paraprofessionals.
- No special training needed
- No software available to calculate scores
- Cannot export scores to planning instruments
- No suggestions for communicating results to families
- The projected results do contribute families' understanding of their child as a learner (at this life stage)
- The norms do match with population I'm teaching
