Scoliosis

Description

a curve in the spine, usually following pubescent growth spurts

Signs and Symptoms

  • uneven shoulders
  • one prominent shoulder blade
  • uneven waist/hips
  • as it rotates, the ribs can become uneven

Cause

mostly unknown

  • can be caused by diseases like cerebral palsy or muscular dystrophy
  • could also be genetic
  • could be caused by injuries or infections to the spine or birth defects.

Outlook

Treatment

If bones are still developing, braces can be used to halt the progression.

Braces are generally not overly restrictive, and effective with long-term use.

For more major cases, surgeries like spinal fusion, rod implantation, are options.

If not treated, the curvature can progress and be painful and inhibiting.

If severe, it can be painful and progress to being worse and restrictive.

Mild scoliosis often does not require treatment.

Right now, we mostly know how to halt the progression, but it is difficult to reverse.

Scientists are researching the causes with the hope of earlier diagnosis, and as they understand more about what causes it they may be able to prevent and treat it better.

Statistics

  • More than 4 million child cases in the US
  • It is 20% of all spinal deformities in US
  • It affects 2-3% of the population in the US
  • Usually occurs between ages 10 and 15
  • 10% of adolescents have slight scoliosis, but it is seldom necessary to treat
  • 80% of scoliosis cases have unknown causes
