King Cophetua and the Beggar-Maid

Citations

In that image it is King Cophetua and his wife. The story is about a King who wasn't really attracted to women, until he came to see a beggar-maid, which was suffering from lack of clothes. He was struck by love at first sight. If the woman wouldn't marry him, he would commit suicide. Then when they were married the lady has lost all traces of poverty.

When King Cophetua noticed the woman, he knew he had to have had her or he would commit suicide. "Art thou so bare and full of wretchedness,

And fear'st to die? famine is in thy cheeks,

Need and oppression starveth in thine eyes,

Contempt and beggary hangs upon thy back;

The world is not thy friend nor the world's law;

The world affords no law to make thee rich;

Then be not poor, but break it, and take this."

Since Romeo can't be with Juliet he's willing to kill himself.

Quote of The Allusion

This allusions relates to Romeo and Juliet. I think Shakespeare chose this allusion, to represent how love can be for anyone. How love can change someone emotionally. Romeo and Juliet were suicidal as well as King Cophetua and the Beggar-Maid.

. "Art thou so bare and full of wretchedness,

And fear'st to die? famine is in thy cheeks,

Need and oppression starveth in thine eyes,

Contempt and beggary hangs upon thy back;

The world is not thy friend nor the world's law;

The world affords no law to make thee rich;

Then be not poor, but break it, and take this."
