Federal Government

Executive Branch

a) Structure: Made up of President, Vice President, and 15 cabinet departments.

Pres: has power vested in him. Responsible for enforcing the laws written by congress, and appoints federal agencies and cabinet members.

V.P: Ready to assume the President should the need arise.

Cabinet: Day-to-day enforcement and administration of laws.

Federal Government

Legislative Branch

b) Pres: Must be 35+, natural born citizen, lived in U.S. for at least 14 years, and one parent must be a citizen.

V.P: Same as President.

a) House of Representatives and Senate

c) President: Makes 400,000 p/year. Benefits: He lives in white house, marine one, and air force one.

Vice President: Makes 230,000 p/year and same benefits as the president.

b) House of Representatives: 25+, U.S. citizen for at least 7 years, and resident of the state you are representing.

Senate: 30+, and 9 years of citizenship, and resident of state.

d) People elect for electoral college. Electors cast the votes for the president.

V.P. is elected along with the president.

Cabinet is appointed by the president and confirmed by senate.

c) HoR: Every 2 years.

Senate: 6 year term, 1/3 of senate is up for election every 2 years.

e) President: 4 year term and can have up to 2 terms.

Vice President: 4 year term, no limit to term.

f) Department of Commerce, Defense, Education, Energy, Health and Human Services, Homeland Security, Housing and Urban Development, Interior, Justice, Labor State, Transportation, Treasury, Veteran Affairs.

d) HoR: Initiate revenue bills, impeach federal officers, elect pres. in an Electoral College tie.

Senate: Confirm president's appointments that require consent and ratify treaties.

e) Senators and Representatives: Senator Mark Udell, Senator Michael Bennet.

Representative Jared Polis and Cory Gardner.

f) Enact legislation, declare war, substantial investigation powers.

Federal Government

Judicial Branch

a) Supreme Court: Highest court. Interprets the meaning of law.

U.S. District Court: Inferior to Supreme Court, Try most federal cases.

b) Congress determines the shape and structure of the federal judiciary.

c) They can only be removed through impeachment by the House of Representatives and conviction by the Senate. There is no fixed term, they are in office until death, retirement, or impeachment.

State Government

d) They try cares and controversies.

Federal courts: Sole power to interpret the law, and determine constitutionality of the law, and apply to individual class.

Inferior courts: Whatever the supreme court says they listen.

Executive Branch

a) Governor: One person, 1st rank

Lieutenant Governor: One person, 2nd rank. Takes over for governor if needed.

Cabinet: 28 officers. 5 elected officers, one member of gubernatorial staff and 22 gubernatorial appointees.

b) Governor: 30+, U.S. citizen, and resident of Colorado for at least 2 years.

L. Gov: Same as Gov.

c) Governor: $90,000

d) Gov: Popularly Elected

e) Governor: 4 year term and 2 term limit.

Legislative Branch

a) 65 Members in the House of Representatives.

b) HoR: 25+, U.S. citizen, resident for 1 year

1/2 is up for election every 2 years.

Senate is the same as HoR.

Senate: 4 years

d) HoR: Initiate bills

Senate: Ratify treaties.

f) Committees make laws, also consider legislation in education finance and local government.

State Government

Judicial Branch

a) State Supreme Court, state court of appeals, 22 judicial districts, 64 county/municipal courts.

b) Chief Judge assigns the judges.

c) Supreme: 7 justices with a 10 year term.

Appeals: 10 judges with an 8 year term.

d) Trials for criminal cases charged with violation of state laws.

Local Government

1. Home Rule Charter

a) Home Rule Charter: The local government can pass laws as they see fit.

Town Board

a) Enact town ordinances, funds to conduct town business, appoint members for boards/administrations. Mayor and 6 board members.

b) Mayor 4 year term as well as the board members.

Mayor and Town Manager

a) Oversees the laws and the town in general.

b) Oversees projects, ensures efficient, quality service, and the flow of info. Appointed by the town board.

School Board

a) They ensure learning and child safety within the school and new plans and things.
