Lesson - Part 1
- As we read the article, "More Than It’s Gonna Hurt You: Concerning Violence," we picked out the some of the important points in the article:
- Violence is very personal between human beings and can be “symbolic, thematic, biblical, Shakespearean, Romantic, allegorical, transcendent.”
- There two categories of violence in literature:
Specific injury violence is when authors cause characters to visit on one another or on themselves. Some examples are aggressive violence such as shootings or bombings.
Narrative violence that causes characters harm in general. The author is responsible for the violence such as death or suffering.
- The purpose of the violence is to advance the plot, complicate the plot, put characters in stress, and reveal thematic development.
- “Violence is everywhere in literature”.

--> connecting the article to East Of Eden, violence within the book can be interpreted as very personal.
For example, on page 85, chapter 8:
"And she was so fresh and pretty that people walking turned and looked after her when she had passed...The fire broke out at about three o'clock in the morning...The Ames house had gone up like a rocket," (85).
- this was when kate killed her parents, which shows that her personal problems with her parents led to violence.
