Unit 9 Lesson 2
Rounding Whole Numbers
and Decimals
What about
Look at these numbers. Are they closer to 1200 or 1300? How do you know?
1250
Objective
1208 1233 1269 1298
One way to prove it would be to use a number line.
It's right in the middle? What do we do?
Students will round whole numbers through millions and decimals through thousandths.
When dealing with a number right in the middle of two place values, we round up!
Place the following numbers on the number line.
We can round decimals the same way.

1. Use a number line and place the values.
2. Identify which number the value is closer to.
3. If it's in the middle, round up.
First, add zeros so all the numbers have the same amount of digits!
0.21
0.278
0.246
0.28
0.27
0.27 round to the closest tenth, is 0.3.
0 0
By placing the 0's after the tenths place in 0.2 and 0.3, we can more easily see where our decimals would fall on the number line.
Knowing that I can add 0's without changing a value can be a very handy trick!
Rounded to the nearest hundred, these numbers become...
1200 1200 1300 1300
By understanding where a number falls on a number line, we can better round that number to a given place value.
We look to see what it is closer to.
Sometimes it is easier to place decimals by ensuring all the numbers have the same amount of digits.
By seeing their placement on the number line, we can determine where to round them!
