Charles Horton Cooley

1864-1929

  • founding father and 8th president of the American sociological association
  • wanted to better understand why humans behave the way they do
  • believed that by studying everyday social interactions between people we could better understand why people behave the way they do

Feminist Theory

  • founded the Women's International League for Peace and Freedom
  • second women to receive the Nobel Peace Prize
  • she tried to get President Wilson to create peace between the countries during World War 1, but he still went into war; Jane spoke out against this and was labeled as a radical and a threat to national security
  • gender differences- how social situations differ
  • gender inequalities- social situations are unequal
  • gender oppression- women are actively oppressed, subordinated and abused by men
  • structural oppression- women's inequality and oppression is a consequence of capitalism, patriarchy, and racism

Jane Addams

1860-1929

  • helped the poor and stop children from being used in factories
  • ran the hull house in Chicago
  • immigrants went to bathe, eat, debate, and acquire the tools they need to start a life in the US
  • she first started the Hull House to provide art and literature classes to her less fortunate neighbors

  • primary relationships are based on affection and personal loyalty
  • secondary relationships are based on interests and goals

NAACP

  • conducted the pioneering sociological study of an urban community which he published as The Philadelphia Negro: A Social Study
  • at first he thought that social sciences could provide the answer to race problems he eventually came to the conclusion that social change could only be accomplished through agitation and protest

William Edward Burghardt Dubois

1868-1963

  • shared the creation of the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People
  • conducted empirical inquiries into the condition of blacks
  • devoted a decade to sociological studies of blacks in America
