Effects Of Television On Children

Introduction

These days, most children cannot live without television which is the one of the fascinating results of modern science. Children love television and spend plenty of time watching televised shows.

According to Villani (2000), children in America watch television more than twenty-one hours per week.

It is clear that children are immersed in watching television.

So now, it is time to think about the effects of television on children because television has become

part of children's life.

Television can affect children’s behavior, health, and sexual attitude.

Affecting children’s health

The most dominant effect of televised shows is afflicting children’s behavior both positively and negatively.

Some people might think television cannot affect children’s health because it is just a black box which can show pictures.

Adults would not think that much about sexual matters on television programs because adults are grown-ups and sexual approach is more common.

However, people should consider sexual expression on television because adults are not the only group of people who watch it.

Children are exposed to sexual content on television without censoring. It is obvious that television is affecting children’s sexual attitude.

As much as children are spending numerous amounts of time observing television, it is affecting their everyday behavior.

Despite the fact that television is just a machine, it can be a cause of obesity and it means television can affect children’s health.

Television and obesity

How TV affects children’s sexual attitude

Television and good behavior

Analysts think that television can be a cause of children’s obesity because it decreases metabolic rates during watching television and causes a lack of physical activity of children by spending time to watch television (Escobar-Chaves & Anderson, 2008).

Children can learn good behavior through television. If they watch an educational program such as Sesame Street, television can be a powerful teaching tool for kids.

In America, most television programs are sexualized. Kids watch 14,000 sexual references and jokes every year. Only 170 of them show deal with abstinence, birth control, sexually infectious diseases, or pregnancy (Bar-on, 2000).

Childhood obesity can cause many disease, high blood pressure and high cholesterol levels. Also, it affects their bone and liver (Karnik and Kanekar, 2012).

They can learn good lessons about racial balance, mutual effort, generosity, easy mathematics, and the alphabet while watching helpful television programs.

Television programs have too many sexual expressions and children are exposed without any concern. Sexual contents are included in almost every programs. Kids are exposed to grown up sexual behaviors which are described as normal, safe, and frequent; it implies that it is something that everybody does.

As much as kids are spending time on television more and more, they spend less and less time to play outside with their friends. It is not only causing antisociality but also causing being fat.

Television and violence

Effects of food commercials on TV

Danger of children’s sexual attitude

A Coyne, Archer, & Eslea (2004, cited in Redden, 2013) study shows that watching aggression from media can create an effect on aggression instantaneously (Redden, 2013).

Sexual messages from television can give shock to them when they are trying to establish their values and thinking about things such as sexual attitudes.

Children learn that high caloric foods which have a lot of fat and sugar are delicious and worth to eat through watching television (Harris & Bargh, 2009).

This demonstrates that if kids watch a violent TV program, they can recreate violent and disturbing behavior.

Kids are lacking in judgment of distinguishing abnormal sexual content. They just absorb everything from the sexual content.

Food commercials are shown a lot on TV and children watch it mostly; 98% of foods which are advertised on TV have low nutritional value (Harris & Bargh, 2009).

Children can not distinguish which behavior is good or which behavior is bad. Kids are in the progress of learning about good and bad behavior. Therefore, if you let children watch television, adults should be careful about what they will see on the program. If adults do not, their behavior can be changed in bad ways.

It might not be noticeable when they were young but as their subconscious can be affected by what they see, when they become grown-ups, their subconscious can make them imitate the content they had seen.

Conclusion

People watch television almost every day. It is part of our lives. People watch television, they discuss about televised programs, and share the same emotion that was distributed from televised programs. Now, it is unimaginable to think the life without television.

However, as much as television has been becoming part of people’s life, people should beware of its negative outcomes, especially on children. Children are the future. They can make the world better or worse. As a consequence, adults are responsible for guiding them into the accurate path. As adults lead them into the right way, kids will have a perception to compose the world into a better world.

People need to care about them and be aware of the effects of television on them because television can affect children’s attitude, fitness, and sexual outlook.
