The Allusion of Echo and Narcissus in Romeo and Juliet

Romeo and Juliet

“Bondage is hoarse and may not speak aloud, Else would I tear the cave where Echo lies” (Juliet: II, ii, 161 & 162 )

She had wanted to see Romeo and had been

repeating, "My Romeo!"

She wanted to go to the cave where Echo died

and make her repeat, "My Romeo!"

Echo

Narcissus

In Greek mythology, Echo was a mountain nymph whose incessant chattering distracted Hera while Zeus was with other nymphs. Hera had taken Echo's ability to speak. She was only able to repeat what another had said. Soon she fell in an unrequited love with Narcissus. He repulsed her advances on him leaving her unable to declare her love for him. She died not being able to tell Narcissus that she loved him.

In Greek Mythology, he was a handsome son of

a river god, and was loved by nymph Echo.

When Echo had died, Nemesis fated Narcissus to fall in love with his own reflection.

Narcissus had died and became a flower near a

pool of water.
