1960 A.D. The Mirabals, later to be nicknamed the butterflies, grew up in the city of Salcedo. Three of the sisters (Patria, Minerva, and Maria Theresa) were killed for their opposition to the Trujillo reign on their way to visiting their imprisoned husbands.

1861 A.D. - 1865 A.D. Due to the uncertainty of whether or not independence was a foolhardy choice, the newly declared country voluntarily annexes itself back to Spain for several years. There is ever talk of possible annexation by the United States.
1930 A.D. Trujillo started with a military career provided by the United States, who was governing the country at the time, and then moved into politics. Through political maneuvering that included torturing supporters of the opposition, Trujillo “won” the election.
1996 A.D. Upon an agreement known as the “Pact of Democracy”, Balaguer acceded to not run in the 1996 election. This allowed Leonel Fernandez Reyna, a member of the Dominican Liberation Party, to be elected President. As President, he vowed to end political corruption, strengthen the country's economy, and reestablish relations with Cuba.
2005 A.D. The Central American Free Trade Agreement was a trade treaty between the United States and a group of smaller developing economies within Central America. The agreement created new economic opportunities, opened markets, reduced restrictions, and established transparency within the developing economies.
1883 A.D. - 1899 A.D. As a solution for the political turmoil brought on by a large debt to multiple European countries and the United States, the dictatorship brought some economic progress. At the end of his reign, Heureaux met his fate at the hands of an assassin.
1844 A.D. Following a revolution to overthrow Jean Pierre Boyer, who was the current ruler of Haiti and ruled Santo Domingo (Dominican Republic) as a province of Haiti, the eastern half of Hispaniola declares it’s independence.
1961 A.D. On the 30th of May, 1961, Trujillo was driving late in the evening to San Cristobal, where he housed on of his young mistresses. On the way he was ambushed by seven men who gunned him down.
1916 A.D. - 1924 A.D. Woodrow Wilson, the president of the United States at the time, sends in United States troops in order to recover two things: the first is to attempt and settle the United State’s international debt, and the second is to subdue the country’s economic debt and relax the tensions rousing the beginnings of civil war.
