Now the reasons for these incidents may be due to the fact of Ms. Lee's personality and her want of privacy. She never expected her book to be so popular and with that she always expected a quiet and modest life. Another factor as to why these incidents happen is because TKAM was based on her childhood and those things she shares are special to her. The way she sees things is different from everyone else's and not everyone will respect that.

Who is Truman Capote?

By Alyssa Corpuz, Chantel Pacheco, and Arriane Hidalgo

Is the new novel going to be once again based on her childhood?

The Importance of Personal History

Go Set a Watchman is Harper Lee's new book and the sequel of TKAM. The story will be once again told from Scout's perspective but 20 years later. The story is also set in Maycomb when Scout goes to visit her father. This book was actually written before TKAM, and Lee's editor recommend to write from the heroine's childhood perspective. But even though the book is set 20 years after where we left off in TKAM, it still includes flashbacks to Scout's childhood.

Truman Capote is an author. He grew up as Harper Lee's neighbor and they were very close and were even friends. They helped each other out writing books whenever they needed it.

Why is TKAM Lee's only published book?

  • Harper Lee has always been a "private" and "disclosing" when it came to dicussing her childhood publicly
  • Because so, much of her childhood comes from her friends and "anecdotes"
  • And from these sources Harper Lee is said to be "not unlike"(Bio) Scout growing up.
  • For example Ms. Lee grew up in a small town in Alabama called Monroeville, much lie Maycomb county
  • From that she knows what small town life is like
  • Another example is that the name "Finch" (Lee) is her mother's surname
  • And also like "Atticus Finch" (Lee), her "father was a lawyer" (Bio)

She was busy writing and collaboratung with Truman. She didnt stop writing but she did stay on the low and didnt publish another book after that. She was happy with the great success her first book had.

So the importance of Harper Lee's personal history to her first novel, is because it is based on her childhood, her thoughts and memories.

Controversies and Legal Issues

  • May 3, 2013- Ms. Lee Filed a lawsuit against a "son-in-law of a former agent"(Bio), who attempted in a scheme to trick her out of the copyright of TKAM.

Work Cited

  • 2013- She later also filed against the Old Court House Museum, in her hometown, for selling TKAM merchandise. She believes that this "infringes on her trademarks" and "seeks" the destruction of the items (Bio).

Marja Mills befriended Alice and Harper Lee and was told she had the "blessing" (McClurg) to write the biography.
