- Queen Lili’uokalani- King Kalakua’s sister, overthrown with help from the US
- Sanford B. Doll- wealthy planter/ businessman that worked towards overthrowing Hawaii, became president.
- Alfred T. Mahan- A naval officer and historian who urged American leaders to build a stronger navy and obtain naval bases in Hawaii.
Important Events
In 1887-American planters convinced King Kalakua to amend the constitution to limit voting rights to wealthy white planters.
In 1891- King Kalakua dies, his sister Queen Lili’uokalani becomes his successor
In 1893- Hawaiian revolt where american planters overthrow Queen Lili’uokalani because she abolished the constitution which allowed for white power.
In 1898- The annexation of Hawaii- President Harrison signed but it didn’t become official until McKinley approved of it.

- Extractive Economy- Economy in a colony where the colonizing country removed raw materials and shipped them back home to benefit its own economy.

- Queen Lili'uokalani was dethroned because she rewrote the constitution to get rid of white americans rights.
- Businessmen wanted Hawaii to be annexed and become part of the united states
- High tariffs were placed on Hawaiian goods
- Sanford B. Doll (a white planter) became first president of the republic
- President Mckinley made it a territory in 1897
- Vast economic gain from new Hawaiian products
