Man Vs. Self

The characters in this novel all face very difficult situations constantly and are constantly faced with situations asking them to go against what they truly want. I could see this being a very discouraging and hopeless feeling as well as the horrible aftermath of whats left from the war.

Man Vs. Environment

Internal: The siege affects the characters mentally alot and discourages them from seeing hope in their lives anymore.

Manifestation

An event, action, or object that clearly shows or embodies something, especially a theory or an abstract idea.

"A weapon does not decide whether or not to kill. A weapon is a manifestation of a decision that has already been made."

External: The land around them is not very helpful either for building their hope in seeing a better life. Most of the buildings are gone and what remains is mostly destroyed.

Conflicts

✳✱*

Vulnerability comes from the Latin word "wound"

Vulnerability

The setting of this chapter takes place after the siege when most of the city has been demolished and there have been thousands of people killed.. What is left of the buildings is lit on fire and there are dead bodies laying in the street as if it were supposed to be normal. The mood is very dark and a very depressed mood due to all the fighting and killing. The characters are losing hope in ever seeing a better life and contemplating if they will be able to continue on surviving their lives while still trying to look after what they need to.his is very hard when you know you can be killed if the wrong person happens to see you. This chapter is a very bad time for the characters in the novel and this is at the point where they are losing their motivation to keep on fighting in their lives.

is the quality of being easily hurt or attacked.

"He shifts his weight, and his rifle becomes visible. It's apparent he's unaware of his vulnerability, has become lazy and inattentive."

Man Vs. Man

Facts:

The siege lasted from

April 5, 1992 - February 29, 1996

which is 1,425 days.

Wasteland

A bleak, unattractive, and unused or neglected urban or industrial area.

"Arrow looks through her scope. Grbavica is a Wasteland."

Most people in the city now are very cautious who they are interacting with or who they even let see them. Enemies can be very indistinguishable at times and living in a place like this, you can never be too cautious. They have to worry about losing their lives every step they take out of cover. Living with this type of fear can add very bad stress to your life.

Wondrous

An inspiring feeling of wonder or delight; marvelous.

Setting and Mood

"It's a rare gift to understand that your life is wondrous, and that it wont last forever."

Keenan

Vocabulary

The Cellist

The Photograph represents the character Kennan a thirty nine year old family man who is dedicated and motivated to provide for his family or die trying. Kennan and his family live in an apartment in Sarajevo that has no running water and a limited amount of electricity a day only running for a number of hour. every four days kenan travels across the war torn country to bring back clean drinking water for the living risking his life for others who take him for granted

Facts:

13,952 people

died during the

siege of Sarajevo.

This Photograph depicts a strong message and also represents

The cellist of Sarajevo who is committed to play the cello for 22 days to honor the death of 22 people who died by a shelling while waiting in line at a bakery for a loaf of bread.

Character Development

The Desire For Self-Preservation

components of color, form, line, shape, space, texture, and value.

- One's desire for self-preservation means a person's ability to make sure their life remains stable and that they are remembered.

The Cellist of Sarajevo, Arrow and Dragan

Arrow

- This can be shown through Arrow's resilience to stop the invading forces and make sure that her city and her people including herself, are taken care of and will be thought of for generations to come.

The way our environment Shapes Our Identity

-Our environment shapes our identity in many ways. Depending on your surrounding, your view points on many things could vary. For example once Arrow's environment had changed around her she as well changed.

This Photograph represents a young female sniper by the name of “arrow” arrow has pinpoint precision and is a main defense in Sarajevo picking off men destroying her city. arrow had been a member of the university sharp-shooting team she .She faces her opponents on the battlefield but at one point in her life she had no rivalry she hates no one but dedicates her life to protect her home land.and tries to defend her city with here talent.

Dragan

-This is shown in my section by Arrow's perseverance to fight off the enemy forces and keep fighting so that maybe one day her environment may be set back to the way it was before the battle.

By Mo, Jack, and Samuel

- An example of a motif in this section is Arrow stating that "They're rabid animals. Killing them does the world a favor".

A husband and father of his separated sons dragan is an old man that spends his fewer days working at a bakery in Sarajevo feeding the homeless and people in need The war hardens Dragans sensibility and drives him to hopeless pessimism which causes him anxiety and prevents him from contact with people of his past to strangers that he may meet on the street.

- This is a motif because it shows Arrows perseverance, ruthlessness, and determination to rid the enemies from her beloved Sarajevo.

Chapter Summary

Motifs And Symbolism

Themes

Visual Elements

An individual's attempt to uphold dreams, goals, and ideals

- The Cellist is a major symbol in this story and this section in specific.

{Arrow}Throughout the war, food and water are becoming a precious resource but of what there is, "Her stomach grumbles, protesting her small supper of rice and weak tea." She can’t stand rice.

{Keenan}Throughout this section Keenan thinks about what his life would be like without the war: not having to get water every couple days and risking his life doing it and simply turning the running water on at home and drinking it like it was not a precious resource.

{Dragan} looking at his options and finding ways to be safer but also better at helping his broken society .

{The cellist} struggling to play for the last few days as soldiers fire shots towards him trying to take him down.

Most characters are taking time to re-evaluate their lives and think about what they're doing and if it's worth it. They're all thinking what they could do better about their situations.

- The Cellist of Sarajevo is a perfect example of individuals plagued by hatred and suffering to fight what they believe in and to one day achieve their goals of peace and prosperity.

- This is because the Cellist is unafraid of what may happen to him by the hands of his enemies. What the Cellist seems to be afraid of is the people of Sarajevo losing hope. His main goal is playing a role in keeping the hope. The Cellist gives the people of Sarajevo great hope in this apocalyptic time.

- On page 200 there is a man standing and walking, this man is not a solider and is causing no harm to anyone.

- On page 202 Arrow exclaims that "They're rabid animals. Killing them does the world a favor". This symbolizes Arrow telling us of her goals to rid her land of these treacherous men and reclaim her and the people of Sarajevo freedom.

- This man is a symbol of vulnerability which can be related to the majority of the city of Sarajevo. Most of the people here are a victim of hate and destruction they only wish for their city and their loved ones to be safe. During this Arrow even exclaims "There's no confidence in his walk,no authority, and he's clearly unarmed." This further states that not everyone is a killer and in this situation and many had been unfathomably harmed.

The way threatening forces challenge an individual's personal integrity

- One of the meanings of integrity is the state of being whole and undivided. In this section Arrow shows examples of wanting to make the people of Sarajevo undivided and strong. Also she shows her own strength and her ability to stay true to what she believes in.

- An example of this is on page 203 when men are sent to kill the Cellist. She knows she must not let this happen because the Cellist is a sign of hope in Sarajevo during this time of hopelessness .
