When a powerful country directly controls less powerful countries and uses their resources to increase its own power and wealth

Britain, France, Germany, Belgium, Spain, Portugal, and Italy.

Naming Traditions in African Culture

  • Christopher Columbus was looking for a route to India, China, Japan and the Spice Islands.
  • Wanted to bring back silks and spices
  • He landed on a small island in the Bahamas,
  • Columbus called all the people he met on the islands ‘Indians’ because he thought he was in India
  • Colonizers stayed because they found things of value.

Usually indigenous names.

Usually named after tribe, or unique meeting behind it

For example: Sudanese people name their children in this order: personal name, father's first name, and grandfather's first name

Slave Names

A personal name given by others to an enslaved person

Name inherited from enslaved ancestors

Applies mostly to African Americans and Caribbean people who are descended from enslaved Africans

Usually an Anglo Saxon name. (i.e Roberts, Sutton, Johnson)

Slave owners also used biblical names to attempt to convert slaves into Christianity.
