Of Mice and Men By: John Steinbeck

Characters

Literary Devices

Symbolism

Symbolism-The use of symbols to represent ideas or qualities.

An example of symbolism is a cut off hand to represent candy because he lost his hand.

Another example is a pair of boxing gloves to describe Curley because he was a golden glove and he loved to fight.

Curley's Wife

Figurative Language

Curley

Curley's wife was a young woman that liked to flirt with the men at her husbands job and everybody knew eventually it would get someone in trouble and it did.

Lennie

Foreshadowing

Parallel

Lennie is mentally challenged but has great strength and sometimes doesn't know his own strength or how to control it this gets him in great trouble in the long run.

Steinbeck uses many literary devices like personification, similes, and sarcasm. An example of irony in the book is that Curley thinks everybody wants his wife when everybody really dislikes her.An example of a simile from the bookis "Curley was flopping like a fish on a line."An example of personification "The sycamore trees whispered in a little night breeze."

Curley is the boss's son and is a hot headed trouble maker who likes to pick fights with people who he knows he can get the better of .

An example of foreshadowing is When Lennie killed the mouse because he squeezed it to hard it showed that he didnt know his own strength and that it was gonna get him in trouble in the end.

Imagery

A parallel in Of Mice and Men is that George and Lennie's dream and Curley's wife's dream to be an actress are never achieved.

An example of an imagery quote in Of Mice and Men is:

"A few miles south of Soledad, the Salinas River drops in close to the hillside bank and runs deep and green. The water is warm too, for it has slipped twinkling over the yellow sands in the sunlight before reaching the narrow pool. On one side of the river the golden foothill slopes curve up to the strong and rocky Gabilan mountains, but on the valley side the water is lined with trees - willows fresh and green with every spring, carrying in their lower leaf junctures the debris of the winter's flooding; and sycamores with mottled, white, recumbent limbs and branches that arch over the pool."

George Milton

Candy

Crooks

George is a intelligent man who is Lennie's Guardian and best friend.

Candy was an old farm hand who had lost his hand and offered to help George and Lennie pay for the little farm.

Crooks is a black stable hand who got his name from his crooked back that acquired from a horse kicking him.

This book takes place in 1930 in the Great depression age in Salinas Valley, California.

Theme

Opinion

I feel like the theme of the story is to love your loved ones no matter what, resist your temptations ,and to work hard and steady to achieve your vision of the American Dream.

I really like this book it was very suspenseful and it had a good meaning behind it. I would recommend this book to people it could help build character and make you think about how you treat other with disabilities.

Circular Plot Structure

The story ends where it begins at the Salinas River.

Theme

Theme

Google and the book Of Mice and Men.

The theme of the story is to achieve the American Dream by any means. Lennie and Georges dream of living off the "fatta the lan" symbolizes this dream.

One of the themes is to love your loved ones no matter what an example of that is George shooting Lennie and making it quick and painless instead of letting Curley get to him and having him suffer.

One of the themes was to resist your temptations an example of that in this book is Lennie not being able to resist touching curley's wife's hair which lead to him getting in trouble.
