THE CONJURING

Transitions

sinister 2

This is not the same as splicing as this is the actual pace of the shot itself when on its own, not grouped with others. This is commonly shown in horror trailers to trigger fear; by increasing the speed, tension is also increased for audience members. Shots are sometimes slowed down to suggest the victim's lives flashing before their very eyes and to again, increase the uneasiness of the visuals. In the following slides, I have embedded trailers that feature the manipulation of time through shots by fastening or slowing down certain shots.

Common transitions that are used within horror trailers are usually fade to black and straight cuts. Fading to black gives the trailer a mysterious and tense feel and may make the audience feel at unease. They suggest fear of the unknown giving the audience what they may experience in the film and tell them not everything is right, even when it seems to be. Straight cuts are very basic but allow for fast paced shots and potentially jump scares. On the following slides are trailers that feature the fade to black transition effectively.

Editing Styles are very important in horror trailers in identifying the genre and contribute to the fear and tension of it. In this presentation I will research various editing styles used in existing horror trailers that will influence our editing techniques for the Wiccan trailer.

THE WOMAN IN BLACK

Filters are used on all trailers to suggest certain moods or feelings and to establish the genre of horrror; so these moods are usually dark. Blue filters are usually utilised in certain trailers to suggest isolation and coldness. Red filters can also be used to suggest danger and death. When editing our trailer we would consider a blue filter over the shots where Violet seeks help from the Spirit Guide to suggest her isolation from the outside world due to her differences as a person. The following trailers utilise filters effectively to suggest isolation and danger.

SPLICING

Splicing is seen in many horror trailers, particularly towards the end. This is when a variety of fast paced shots are edited together of various important and scary parts of the film. When editing, I will do this to create fear and tension just before the trailer ends. On the following slides are some trailers that utilise the splicing effect.
