Timeline of Colonial America

Jamestown

While these people were looking for Jamestown, they did not make it and created yet another place to settle.

This was the first successful settlement in colonial America. This allowed people to freely practice religion which was a big change.

This war was between American forces vs. the French and Indians. This helped Americans unite together for a common purpose.

American leaders and Iroquois tribe leaders met in Albany, NY. This allowed the Indians and Americans communicate and solve problems.

Proclamation of 1763

The Proclamation Line enraged many colonists. It said that the colonists could not settle west of the Appalachian Mountains.

Sugar Act

1764

The Sugar Acts taxed refined sugar and coffee. These were very common items for the colonists to import.

Currency Act

This tax banned the colonies from using paper money. They claimed the colonies system was to confusing.

The Stamp Act taxed paper documents and licenses. This really enraged colonists.

The Stamp Act congress met in 1765 to discuss the Stamp Act. There they made the Declaration of Rights and Grievances.

The Stamp Act Congress got Parliament to drop the Stamp Acts. They then wrote the Declaratory Act.

Townshend Acts

Taxed glass, lead, paint etc.This helped fuel the fire of the American Revolution.

Letters from a Farmer in Pennsylvania

John Dickinson wrote these stories to the colonists. This helped unite the colonists against the Townshend Acts.

Sam Adams' Letters

Sam Adams' letter circulated around the colonies. This gave the colonies a idea of British activity.

Boston Massacre

Citizens of Boston protest against British forces and get shot. This angered the colonist and are ready to rebel.

Philadelphia Merchants join the boycott. This helps the protesting become more successful.

The Virginia House of Burgesses said that only the colonies could tax the colonies. This will farther unite the colonies together to fight.

Merchants in NY and Boston signed these agreements not to import or export to Great Britain. This helped make Britain repeal taxes.

Burning the Gaspee was a sign to the British that the colonies were powerful and serious.

Thomas Jefferson suggested each colony make a committee to communicate about British activity. Also for colonies to unite and become closer.

The Tea Act taxed all imported tea from Britain. This was the last straw for the colonists.

The Quebec Acts were made 1 month after the Coercive Acts. These acts would anger colonies but also Indians.

These acts were to punish Massachusetts for the Tea Party. Also to end colonial changes to British authority.

150 enraged colonists dumped tea off of British ships. This will be a great step in fueling the revolution.

The first continental congress met in Philadelphia to discuss war against British resistance.

Stated that America is breaking free from Britain and they are their own country to govern.

These were the first shots of the war. British and colonies are now at war with eachother. Also the Olive Branch petition was ignored by the king.

Common Sense was a pamphlet written by Thomas Paine that said that the colonies need to separate by the mother country.

When word spread that Gage was coming, the people of the colonies were sirprosed but ready for anything.

The Continental Army is now ready with a General to fight against the British. This shows they are serious about fighting.

The Second Continental Congress met to discuss plans incase of crisis. Here they made an army called the ,"Continental Army".
