Religious Diffusion

  • 1.5 billion people practice Islam
  • Islam is the second most followers in the world, behind Christianity
  • Islam is the world's fastest-growing faith, it will leap from 1.6 billion (in 2010) to 2.76 billion by 2050
  • Someone must recite a creed and fully devote themself to Allah to become Muslim

Religion Diffusion Cont.

  • Islam was formed by Muhammad, in present day Mecca, during the 6th century
  • Islam underwent imensive expansion diffusion by many Arabic traders spreading throughout much of south-eastern Asia, through this relocation diffusion was made possible with access to the Arabian sea, furthermore, spreading throughout trading lines.
  • Islam is mostly practiced in the Middle-East... Map-
  • The three main routes of diffusion were across the Sahara, through Sudan into Uganda and across the Red Sea, and down East Africa
  • Contagious diffusion is visible when other religions had contact with Islam and spread its ideas
  • Another main type of diffusion is Hierachial, Muhammed persuaded people in Mecca

  • Islam is a growing religion that is expanding in the US, Europe, and much of Australia
  • The core of Islam still remains in Mecca

Religous Beliefs

  • Five beiefs of Islam/ Five Pillars:

-Sahahada- Muslims must declair faith to Islam

-Salat- Muslims must complete prayers five times a day

-Zakat- Muslims must pay tax for less fortunate

-Saium- Muslims must fast during Rahmadan

-Hajj- Must take pilgrimage to Mecca

  • There are two branches of Islam
  • The first are the Sunni- they follow the example os Muhammed, and further believe in the caliph, that muhammed's descendents are still in power, 83% believe that. they are heavily populated in south-west Asia
  • The shiites- are mostly in Iran, there are only 17% of them. they do not accept the Caliph.
  • These two groups highly dislike each other and have been known to kill each other for small difference

Islam

  • Muslims believe that everything is created by Allah and shows his divine mercy
  • All resources have been created by God to care for us and provide for us
  • The earth and everything in it shows the love Allah has for his people
  • Islam guides most people lives from birth to death
  • legal religious leaders are called Mullahs
  • Mullahs have an immense amount of power in their regions and are considered infailable
  • People of Islam trade only with people of Islam and will not buy or sell to other religions
  • Muslims will defend their religion to the death, they are told to punish those who distort Muhammed
  • The holy territory treaty influences political decisions and is a religios belief in gaining more Islamic territory

Religious Landscape

  • An islamic place of worship is called a Mosque
  • The symbol is a star and crescent moon
  • The color of Islam is green because it is said to have been Muhammed's favorite color
  • Allah is the symbol to all Muslims as power and mercy
  • When people die they are to be buried as soon as possible. the body is not to be touched or cut and the head should face Mecca
  • Life at home is influenced by the principles of privacy, modesty, and hospitality. they must also refrain from living by holy sites.
