Melodrama is....

When was it popular?

A type of drama where the emotions of the characters are EXAGGERATED and simplified and are centred around good and evil.

Popular in the 1800s

Actors were trained in a classical style which meant that they were often given a set of movements to express certain emotions

The audience could easily understand these movements/ emotions

Characters

There are often 4 different types of character in melodrama, and they each have 'lines of business...'

Can you remember the types of character?

“I shall go and inform my parents. I shan’t be long. I’ll meet you in the sunny flowered glade where oft we have walked alone together. Adieu”.

“He will not meet you in fair fight I know it. He has some evil plan up his sleeve. For my sake, Henry, I beg you, let us go to my father’s house”.

“You’ll see! If I can’t have what I want I usually take it anyway. Who knows what sort of accident might befall him between now and the wedding”.

“We tie her to the railway tracks with her neck on the line and then when the train comes it will cut off her pretty little head”.
