Scabies (ska' bez)

  • spreads by skin to skin contact
  • very rarely in water
  • sharing of clothes
  • Mites that burrow in the epidermis
  • lay eggs and continue to multiply if not treated
  • 10 to 15 live in a human at one time
  • Mites only live for 48- 72 hours
  • itch mostly at night

very contagious

Is NOT deadly

  • can be found all over the body
  • arms, legs, stomach, neck, and groin
  • never found on the head
  • someone may have Scabies for 4 - 6 weeks before they see signs
  • can still spread to other people during this time

treatment= Scabicides (with doctors permission)

  • wash clothes
  • give anyone who has had contact with the infected person the treatment also
  • can be found all over the world
  • can infect infants
  • same symptoms and affects
  • found mostly on arms, backs, legs and stomachs
  • can harm animals
  • "mange"
  • does not harm humans
