Bulgaria 1925, Incident at Petrich

Causes

Social- Each nation felt they were treated unfairly, Bulgaria didn't get Macedonia, Greece dealing with Rebels

Political- Greek had socialist rebellion, government angered, high political tension

Economic- Reparations to Bulgaria, however before that Greece wanted reparations

Military- Border dispute, once Bulgaria fired, Greece reacted, took over town

Ideological- Each side believed they did the right thing, Bulgaria offered apology

Greek invasion of Bulgarian town

  • Greek soldier crosses border, was shot

  • Greece invades Petrich, Bulgaria

  • Bulgaria didn't resist, wanted League intervention, which they did, they appealed to the League for resolution

League Involvement

  • Greece gave ultimatum, including apology, reparations, punishment of those responsible due to death of their soldier

  • League requested Greece withdraw soldiers, ceasefire, and compensate Bulgaria 45,000 pounds

  • Greece felt they were not treated fairly, similar to Corfu incident
