Why The Americans Wanted Independence From Britain

By: Jessica Gonnerman and Chelsey Huisman

Townshend Act

Facts

  • The people of the colonies wanted independence, because they wanted to trade with other people than just Europe.
  • They were also unhappy that they couldn’t make their own laws. The people began starting to want to govern themselves.
  • Another main reason the Americans wanted freedom was, because Britain was making and accumulating debt and expecting the colonist to pay it off.

In 1767, the Townshend Acts imported taxes on paint, glass, lead, paper, and tea coming from America. The Parliament intended to raise money from the colonies. The money would be used to pay British colonial officials. This is another reason the colonists wanted freedom from Britain.

Stamp Act

The main reason the Americans wanted independence from Britain was because of the Stamp Act, which clearly violated the idea of taxation without representation.

Sugar Act

The colonists refused to pay their taxes on the sugar act, because the taxes were too high.

Facts

Treaty of Paris

In 1783, the Treaty of Paris was signed with Britain, so the United States formally became a free and independent nation.

  • The Americans did not like that Britain was taking all the money they were making from the furs in the Ohio River Valley.
  • They didn’t want to have Britain to own so much land around them in the New World.
  • The Sons of Liberty began to realize Britain was exploiting them.
  • Colonists thought without the Parliament’s rule that they would be able to make more money for themselves.
  • They were mad that there weren’t any Americans in the British Parliament.

  • The American colonists also worried that the British government would take all they wanted because the colonies had no representation in Parliament.

Declaratory Act

In 1766, the Declaratory Act was passed which stated that the Parliament had the right to rule and tax the colonies. This act was meant to warn the colonists against any future protests which made the colonists feel like slaves.
