Biomechanics: Soccer Kick

Performance Errors:

Mechanical Analysis:

Plant Phase:

  • Begins when non-kicking leg has forward motion
  • Hip - extends
  • Knee - begins to flex
  • Ankle - beings to plantar flex
  • Ends when non-kicking foot makes contact with the ground
  • Plant foot placement
  • Perpendicular to ball
  • Pointed towards target
  • Follow through swing
  • Knee - extended
  • Foot - plantar flexed
  • Angle of approach
  • 30 to 45 degrees
  • Allows more pelvic rotation

Soccer Kick

Kick Phase:

Back Swing Phase:

  • Begins with forward motion of the thigh
  • Hip - flexes
  • Knee - extends
  • Ankle - plantar flexes
  • Ends when impact is made with the ball
  • Begins when kicking leg moves backwards
  • Hip - extends / external rotation
  • Knee - flexes
  • Ankle - plantar flexes
  • Ends when hip is in maximum extension
  • Factors
  • Balance - center of gravity
  • Strength - contraction speed
  • Flexibility
  • Neuromuscular adaptation
  • Principles
  • Ball moves in direction of force
  • Ball / Athlete velocity
  • Momentum transferred in collision
  • Longer the follow through the greater the change in momentum
  • Greater mass the greater momentum
  • The higher the elasticity of the ball, the higher the velocity
  • Ballistic / Sequential motion that has high velocities and braking forces, risk of injury
  • Kicking a soccer ball is a sequential movement in which the aim is to project the ball a given distance at an accurate point.

Follow Through Phase:

  • Begins after foot is in final contact with the ball
  • Hip - flexes
  • Knee - flexes
  • Ankle - plantar flexes
  • Ends when hip extends to bring kicking leg back down
