ASP
Single Treatment unit with
retention time around 7 - 12.5hrs.
Since SBR is a batch process, consistent quality at the outlet is achieved as system can handle peakflows effectively.(E.g. Think Rush Hour Traffic)
Downstream processes such as Tertiary Filters thus are saved from handling additional BOD and SS Loads.
Requires multiple treatment units like
primary clarifier, aeration tank and
secondary clarifier.
Units are designed for average flows and operate at higher flows during peak flows.
Even though these peak flow operations are permitted to design, they cause temporary deterioration in quality.
This lead to quality variations every day.
Total retention time in tanks
is around 15 hrs.

AREA REQUIREMENTS
SBR
ASP
Handling of Peak Flows
v/s
Requires only 40% area as compared
to conventional ASP due to compact
scheme. It is only a single tank and
sludge handling system.
Requires more area, as it requires treatment units such as primary clarifier, aeration
tank, secondary clarifiers, thickeners, etc. It
requires further more area for additional
treatment units for tertiary treatment.
Civil Works
Operation and Maintenance
SBR
ASP
Low operating cost due to less number of treatment units and flexibility of operation. In-built features ensures optimum operating costs proportional to the incoming
pollutant load.
If soil condition poor as rock 6m below ground,
requiring expensive pile foundation with high uplift. As ASP requires several treatment units
with circular shape and huge area, it becomes
expensive for civil works.
High due to more number of treatment units and
rigidity of design in operating at lower flows and
lower BOD levels.
It also increases because additional chemicals are
required during tertiary clarification of secondary
treated effluents.
Higher power consumption
Construction cost is low as compactness & simple geometry of SBR Basin minimizes piling cost and thus reduces civil costs significantly. It can be constructed in short period of
time.

COMPARISON
It's a variant of ASP with a twist in tale (or tail)
LETS SEE HOW??
.
The plant is completely automatic
and provided with remote monitoring
facility to monitor its performance.
The plant is not fully automatic. It requires additional investment to implement remote monitoring system.
