Walls of Constantinople

A City like no other

Constantine sought to create a great Christian city full of churches and no Pagan past. He believed that he was doing a great service to God.

Description of Constantinople

Constantinople was a large city surrounded by towering walls. Constantine ordered the construction of dwelling houses in which men of high esteem came to live in. Constantine also built a hippodrome, fountains, and porticoes.

Religion under Constantine

Founding of Constantinople

Constantine wanted to move the capital of the Roman Empire to secure the East. He chose to move the capital to Byzantium, a small Greek city that was easy to defend. When he got to Byzantium, he built large walls around the city and named it Constantinople

Ever since the Battle of Milvian Bridge, Constantine has been a Christian. In the beginning of his political career, he was the emperor of Western Rome, where he made Christianity the official religion. Eventually, he was the ruler of the whole Roman empire, where he did the same.

Constantine Biography

Constantine I, also known as Constantine the Great, was the first Roman emperor to convert to Christianity. Rome evolved into a Christian state because of him, and he created the foundation for the Christian culture that would dominate Medieval Europe.
