Masterpiece by: Elise Broach

Opinion

In my opinion Masterpiece is a good book because it has action and has different perspectives in the book. It is also shocking that a beetle can get along with a boy and how creative he can be. It shows traits like brave, creative, kind, nice, and ect. It also shows talents like artistic. In Masterpiece it states, "He remembered the time he and Elaine had gotten stuck in Mrs. Pompaday's eyeglass case when shed snapped it shut one evening how he paniked and pushed futilely against the felt walls." This shows what happens in Masterpiece.

Characters

Marvin- is the detective in Masterpiece. He solved the mystery by traveling with Fortitude. When he heard Denny he popped his head out he saw Denny. He saw Denny put the drawings in the suitcase and in the closet. Once he got back to the museum and got James to go to the apartment he got James to take the drawings back to the Met, and got James to say that Denny stole the drawings and got Christina to believe James. A character trait to describe Marvin is artistic he drew the outdoor drawings. He is also kind because he drew the drawing because he felt bad for James after his party.

Summary

James- was another important character. He was the one who got Marvin to stop drawing by smashing his hand in the cab. He also understands Marvin. If he did not trust Marvin then he would not save the pictures. Also, if did not create the ideas on how to communicate with Marvin then he would never know that the pictures were in the closet. One character trait for James is shy because he blushed in front of Christina and never really talked to anyone outside of his house besides Karl. Another trait is trustworthy because he never told anyone Marvins secret that he was the none that drew the scenery outside of the window.

Theme

Marvin the beetle lives with his family in the Pompadays cupboard. Mrs. Pompadays son James had a terrible birthday party. Mrs. Pompaday only invited her clients sons over for the birthday party for James. James had a horrible party. Marvin wanted to give something great to James, but he did not have anything to give James. He found a coin and decided to give that to James.

This is the drawing Justice below.

Summary

The theme of the book is team work because Marvin and James worked together to solve the mystery of who had the paintings. They found that Denny had the drawings. James was also creative because he created ways to talk to Marvin and ways Marvin and him (James) would understand. Another way of team work is Christina and the FBI. Christina and the FBI is an example because Christina gave the FBI all the information they would need to find the paintings. She also trusted the FBI to do it. The FBI worked with her because they wanted to discover who had the drawings and recover them. Unfortinitly, they knew who did it (Denny) but, Denny ran away to Germany. All of the drawings would never be returned. In Masterpiece it states, " Marvin ran to James's fingertip and waved his front legs at the door. 'I know, I know. You want to go inside. But how?' James tried the door handle with both hands. 'See, its locked.'.......The only thing he could think to do was to try to spring the lock himself.... 'Guess what? I have a paper clip in my pocket! Maybe that will help.'" This shows that Marvin and James work together well.

Minutes after the drawing was finished James woke up and saw the drawing and tried to discover who the creator was. Marvin just went in front of James. Once spotted James was in shock to find that a beetle (Marvin) made it. After, right before church when Mrs. Pompaday saw the drawing and thought that James made it she was amazed over the fact that her "son James" could draw. She thought it was better then Karl's drawings. Soon right after church when Karl seen the drawing him, James, and secretly Marvin went to the Met were they met Denny, and Christina. Christina had "James" draw a copy of a Durer drawing. Once after seeing the copy she was so happy. She knew that the drawing was going to be stolen and made plans with the FBI. The FBI agent would steal the drawings and would take it to the art world.

Summary

Denny heard all of the plans and knew what to do. He had all of the Durer drawings, but not the one that was about to be stolen. Denny stayed at Goron Perry apartment number 236 East 74th Street, apartment 5D, New York, New York. Denny had all of the paintings in the study room before the last one was stolen. All of them including the only one that Denny did not have was stolen by Denny. Denny was faking the whole thing. He was acting like he did not know what happened. When Christina and Denny switched out the drawings so the thief would take the copy "James" made. When Christina left Denny was still there and switched the drawings again so he would have the real drawing not the copy James made. When Denny got the last one Marvin went to Denny's apartment. Marvin saw Denny put the drawings in the suitcase. Denny got a phone call from Christina and she was worried. She told Denny to go to the Met right away. When Denny went to the Met Marvin went along secretly. Marvin and James found the paintings
