Analysis

  • The Hellenic and Delian leagues united the independent Greek city-states for the first time in Greek history. A congress consisting of representatives from 70 Greek city-states met at Corinth in 481 BC, and the Hellenic alliance was formed. The Delian League, led by Athens, was founded in 478 BC and consisted of 150 to 173 member states. This unification was so significant because Greece was severely divided before, and many of the city-states in the new leagues were previously at war with each other. The U.N., founded in 1945, started with only 51 member states. It has grown to its current size, 193. It has united the entire world on an unprecedented global scale.
  • The Hellenic and Delian Leagues were founded as a consequence of the Greco-Persian Wars which occurred in Greece, Africa, and Asia Minor between 499-449 BC. The U.N. was established after World War II to replace the League of Nations which failed to prevent WWII in the first place. The U.N. was founded to prevent future wars of similar extent and to achieve peace and security for the entire world.
  • The Purpose of the Hellenic League was to resist Persian invasion and to liberate the Greek city-states in Europe from Persian control. The purpose of the Delian League was to continue the wars against Persia after the Peloponnese states succeeded (Sparta) and to liberate the Greek colonies located in Asia Minor. The U.N.'s main purpose is to achieve world peace and security.

Background

  • The unification of the world through the U.N. and the unification of Greece in the fifth century BC have both brought more nationalism. For modern times, a sense of pride in being a world citizen, not just a U.S. citizen. (Ev: International Baccalaureate) For the Greeks, this meant a sense of pride in Greek history and culture. They were no longer fighting vigorously amongst each other as they had been before 500 BC. They began to recognize their shared culture from then on. This would ultimately show when the Greeks and much of Europe [who shared a similar nationalism in the ancient European culture] helped Greece finally achieve independence from the Ottoman Empire in 1821.

Compare/Contrast

U.N.

Hellenic League

(Yellow)

  • Both regions, the world and Greece, were united in unprecedented ways for a single purpose through both the U.N. and the Hellenic/Delian Leagues.
  • All three alliances were consequences of major wars.
  • However, all three were created to serve different purposes.
