Subjects were selected and paired randomly. 27 pairs of boys is less than 10% of all boys. A histogram of the collected data is not necessarily symmetrical, but the sample is between 16 and 40 with no major outliers, so the nearly normal condition is satisfied. Because all conditions have been satisfied, I can proceed with a matched pairs t-test with n-1= 26 degrees of freedom at a significance level of 0.05.

We are 95% confident that in a sample of 27 pairs of male teenagers, the average difference between a male's self rate and the other's rate would be between about -1.65 and 0.39.

In conclusion, this project proved that the females tested failed to see the beauty others see in them; However, most males tested thought highly about themselves regardless of what someone else would rate them. Due to media that advertizes the embodiment of perfection, and society that follows it's proclamation, we are left in a world that does not live by the statement "beauty is only skin deep". Rebel against the common idea that perfection is a set "look" and that it is attainable. Learn to love the flaws that make you, YOU.

Females

✳✱*

Likes VS Dislikes

Males

Likes VS Dislikes

Qualities:

Dislike VS Like

What do females dislike about themselves that others like?

What are males insecure about?

Our experiment is focused on the topic of distorted self image

Regardless of gender, EVERY person has insecurities. These results could be triggering to some. This project was done to shed light on societies faults when it comes to having a "fixed" idea of perfection.

Male

P= Do females see themselves differently than other females see them?

As a whole, this project allowed us to see how people are uncomfortable when facing their own self esteem issues and the self esteem of others. I believe, The concept of fragile masculinity caused the males to have a harder time rating other males. :)

VERSUS

H0: μd = 0

Ha: μd > 0

Rates are the same.

Self rate is lower than other rate.

Female

d = 2.125

sx = 2.213

Subjects were selected and paired randomly. 24 pairs of girls is less than 10% of all girls. A histogram of the collected data is slightly skewed, but the sample is between 16 and 40 with no outliers, so the nearly normal condition is satisfied. Because all conditions have been satisfied, I can proceed with a matched pairs t-test with n-1= 23 degrees of freedom at a significance level of 0.05.

t = 4.704

p = 0.0000486 ≈ < 0.05

Here is what we found...

With a p-value much lower than the set significance level of 0.05, we reject the null hypothesis. We've found statistically significant evidence to prove that a females rate of herself is not equal to the rate that another female would give her. We have evidence to suggest a female is likely to rate her self lower than another female would rate her.

P = Do males see themselves differently than other males see them?

H0: μd = 0

Ha: μd < 0

Rates are the same

Self rate is higher than other rate.

d = -0.6296

sx = 2.5743

t = -1.271

p-value = 0.108

With a p-value of 0.108, we fail to reject the null hypothesis because this value is above the significance level of 0.05. We have little evidence that suggests that a male's self rate is higher than what another male would rate him.

Do people fail to see what others see in them?

We are 95% confident that in a sample of 24 pairs of female teenagers, the average difference between a female's self rate and the other's rate would be between about 1.19 and 3.06.
