Interesting Facts

  • He wrote 28 books,and co-authored 29 others.
  • He wrote hundreds of articles over the course of his life.
  • Huntington was a professor of geography at Yale.
  • Huntington's arguments about his theories were often crude, and his thesis' were not strong.

His Theories

Environmental Determinism and Modern Geography were

Huntington's main theories. Through these theories, Huntington

discovered a subset that he called Climatic Determinism. His theory

stated that the economic development in a country can be predicted

based on its distance from the equator. He said temperate climates

with short growing seasons stimulate achievement, economic growth,

and efficiency.

Quotes from Ellsworth Huntington

  • History in its broadest aspect is a record of man's migrations from one

environment to another.

  • From first to last the civilization of America has been bound up with its physical environment.
  • Man could not stay there forever. He was bound to spread to new regions, partly because of his innate migratory tendency and partly because of Nature's stern

urgency.
