What was the role of the KLA?
- An ethic-Albanian paramilitary organization which sought the separation of Kosovo from Yugoslavia during the 1990s.
- They grew out of independence demonstration staged in the early 1980s by Kosovo's ethic Albanian majority.
- Formed in 1991.
- The KLA was created due to racial tension between Albanians and Serbians.
- Tensions were created when Slobodan Milosevic was elected president of Serbia. He replaced all Albanians officials with Seriban officials.
- Yugoslavian civil war ends but Kosovo's issues wasn't solved.
- Founded in the early 1990s but began activly engaging in coordinated attacks in 1996, targeting several Serbian police stations.
- In 1997 the KLA made its first public statement which was a call to arms outlining the KLA's objectives which included the secession of Kosovo from Serbia.
- Reports of massacres by the Serbians police only increased support for the KLA which attracted thousands of new recruits.
- They tried to over throw the government and create their own Albanian ran government.
The end of the KLA.
- Eventually NATO intervened and brought delegations from the Serbian government and from kosovo into truce negotiations.
- The Kosovar delegation, lead by a KLA leader, was eventually persuaded to sign the treaty, but the Serbian delegation refused.
- In June of 1999 Yugoslavia agreed to terms of peace ending the bombing campaign directed by NATO.
