Living conditions were not very bad for the workers of Stalin's 'model city'.Though it was freezing in winters and covered in mud in the spring. The skilled workers in Magnitogorsk had small apartments with running water, central heating, and electricity. Unskilled workers still had to live in mud huts, But everyone had enough food to eat and were much appreciative of the improvements.
Working in Magnitogorsk huge iron and steel plants were extremely tiring and dangerous. during winter some workers froze to death and if light bulbs burned out had to work in the dark. many of the problems that occurred were due to lack of experienced workers but over time in improved. The workers were paid good but there were very little goods in the stores to buy.
Though the workers had a lot of energy and worked hard Stalin's 5 year plan goals were not met. some of the problems were that there were not enough skilled workers to fill important jobs, improper organization, and poor leadership all hurt the production of steel.
To help fix the problems the communist party encouraged competition between the workers to encourage efficiency.
Though Stalin painted a picture of a perfect socialist city, in all actuality he was reinforced with communist GPU(secret police) who were responsible for keeping spies out of the city. But not only did they do that, they also accused unproductive brigades of workers of being kulaks. which were wealthy peasants. so people accused of being spies or kulaks were then stolen from their homes and forced to work in labor camps where many of then died. though some might of been spies or an enemy the main reason for there acts were to instill fear into the population to make them obey the communist party.
